Dr. Epperlein is well known for his important contributions in optimizing performance and reliability of semiconductor and superconductor devices. Most crucial for these and other major achievements and contributions was his pioneering development and introduction of novel techniques and approaches to measure: (i) laser diode operating temperatures, (ii) built-in mechanical stress, (iii) atomic disorder effects in laser mirror facets, (iv) silicon re-crystallization effects in mirror coatings, (v) correlations of these parameters with laser characteristics, (vi) spatial uniformity of the tunnel barrier in superconducting tunnel junctions. All of these pioneering experiments led to world’s first results. Many have been adopted by other researchers in academia and industry.
