An Accomplished Professional at First Glance

Dr. Epperlein is an experimental, solid state physicist of high professional competence with a broad scientific/technical background and an established, broad issue resolution potential, well recognized throughout his industrial professional career to provide highly reliable quality / design and reliability assurance, companywide and cross-functional.

He accumulated the broad spectrum of his professional competencies in most different roles in cutting edge photonics and electronics industries, over a period of more than 25 years, in hands-on and managerial capacities, both in global and start-up companies including IBM, HP, Agilent, Philips, NXP and IBM/JDSU Laser Enterprise, Essient Photonics, Si-Light Technologies, respectively.

He has a strong experience in the development of a wide range of technologies and products including laser diodes in the wavelength range 0.67-1.3µm, fibre-optics components, highest performance and reliability single-mode fibred pump laser modules for the submarine communications systems market, electro-absorption optical modulators, silicon and gallium nitride light-emitting diodes, quantum well lasers and resonant tunnelling diodes, field effect transistors, silicon CMOS-ICs, superconducting devices and integrated circuits for IBM’s pre-eminent Josephson computer project.

Dr. Epperlein is well known for his important contributions in optimizing performance and reliability of semiconductor and superconductor devices. Most crucial for these and other major achievements and contributions was his pioneering development and introduction of novel techniques and approaches to measure: (i) laser diode operating temperatures, (ii) built-in mechanical stress, (iii) atomic disorder effects in laser mirror facets, (iv) silicon re-crystallization effects in mirror coatings, (v) correlations of these parameters with laser characteristics, (vi) spatial uniformity of the tunnel barrier in superconducting tunnel junctions. All of these pioneering experiments led to world’s first results. Many have been adopted by other researchers in academia and industry. Moreover, those unique results added high value to the progress of new product / emerging technology development processes.      

Areas dealt with recently include printed electronics, silicon CMOS photonics, image sensors, optical detectors, quantum well solar cells, nanotechnology manufacturing and measurement equipment.

His different roles across the entire product development cycle included at all times key advisory and training capacities up to the most senior levels and extending over the broad spectrum of his primary expertise areas, proving once again Dr. Epperlein’s high professional competence, his versatility and flexibility along with the comprehensiveness of his quality and reliability assurance involvements and accomplishments and his core issue resolution capabilities (see below).
